Wisconsin girl, 10, charged with killing baby in day care

She is accused of killing a 6-month-old boy by stomping on his head.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WIS. — A 10-year-old Wisconsin girl was led into court in handcuffs Monday morning and charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of a 6-month-old boy.

The girl appeared at a bond hearing in Chippewa County Circuit Court. Accompanied by her parents, she sobbed throughout the 10-minute hearing, where Circuit Judge James Isaacson ordered her held on $50,000 cash bond.

The Star Tribune is not identifying the girl because her case likely will be referred to juvenile court. However, Wisconsin law requires that first-degree homicide charges initially be brought in adult court if the accused is age 10 or older.

Wearing a colorful striped skirt, a black hoodie and pink sneakers, the girl buried her head in her mother’s arms, moaning and crying as Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell described the charge against her.

According to Newell, police responded to an emergency call on the afternoon of Oct. 30. A 6-month-old boy at a licensed day care center in the rural town of Wheaton, just west of Chippewa Falls, was found unresponsive and bleeding from the head. The baby was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, where he died Nov. 1.

Police questioned one adult and three children who were present at the day care center. They quickly settled on the girl as the prime suspect, said Chippewa County Sheriff James Kowalczyk.

According to Kowalczyk, the girl said she was holding the baby when she dropped the infant, who hit his head on a footstool. When the baby cried, she panicked and stomped on the child’s head, the sheriff said. A local doctor who examined the baby determined that the injuries were not accidental, he added.

Although the girl’s biological parents were with her in court, authorities said she had been removed from their home in September and placed in foster care with the same family that also runs the day care center where the infant’s death occurred.

Mother fights to have son removed from chemotherapy after clean bill of health

By Kristin Thorne

MINEOLA, Long Island (WABC) — A mother on Long Island is fighting to have her son removed from chemotherapy treatment after he was given a clean bill of health by doctors.

Candace Gundersen’s son, Nick Gundersen, 13, is receiving court-ordered chemotherapy at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola. He’s now in the custody of Suffolk County Child Protective Services.

Gundersen of Huntington said Nick was diagnosed by doctors at Cohen Children’s Medical Center with acute leukemia in June 2018. Gundersen said she asked doctors if she could get a second opinion before Nick began chemotherapy on June 30th.

“They told me if I didn’t consent to the treatment they would call CPS and have me removed and my son would have the treatment anyway,” Gundersen said. “So I signed the consent.”

‘A Parent’s Worst Nightmare;’ Son Given Illegal Sex Change Operation by School System, Claims Mother

By Michael Gryboski

A federal appeals court recently heard arguments in a lawsuit in which a Minnesota mother sued a school district and others over giving her underage son a sex change operation without her consent.

Anmarie Calgaro filed a lawsuit against St. Louis County, Fairview Health Services, Park Nicollet Health Services and the St. Louis County School District in 2016 for treating her son as an emancipated minor and providing gender transition treatments without notice.

Calgaro was represented by the Thomas More Society, who presented arguments before a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit last month.

In a statement emailed to supporters on Wednesday, Society Special Counsel Erick Kaardal called Calgaro’s experiences “a parent’s worst nightmare.”
